The Parable of the Talents: The True Character of Our Creator
Many people have formed a version of God that demands little, confronts nothing, and never holds anyone accountable. But Jesus did not describe the Father that way. In the parable of the talents, He reveals a Master who is generous, purposeful, and just.
“Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.” Matthew 25:21, ESV
The master entrusted each servant with something valuable according to his ability. Two servants immediately put what they had received to work. The third buried his talent and allowed fear to become an excuse for doing nothing.
The issue was not that every servant produced the same amount. They were not given equal assignments. What mattered was whether they were faithful with what the master had placed into their hands.
God has entrusted every believer with time, opportunities, abilities, resources, and influence. None of it belongs to us absolutely. We are stewards, and Scripture teaches that a day of accountability is coming. Jesus will not measure our faithfulness by comparing us with someone else. He will judge what we did with what He gave us.
The third servant tried to blame his failure on the master’s character. His distorted view produced fear, passivity, and disobedience. What we believe about God will always shape how we respond to Him.
This parable is not teaching that salvation can be earned through productivity. It warns that genuine faith does not remain buried. Those who truly know the Master will trust Him, obey Him, and faithfully use what He has entrusted to them.
