Why You Can’t Hear the Voice of God
Many believers wonder why they struggle to hear God. They pray for direction, wait for an answer, and become frustrated when heaven seems silent. But sometimes the problem is not that God has stopped speaking. The problem is that our hearts have become too hardened, distracted, or disobedient to receive what He has already said.
“Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” John 8:47, ESV
Jesus spoke these words to religious people who knew Scripture, followed traditions, and believed they understood God. Yet when the Son of God stood directly before them, they rejected His voice. Their religious activity had not produced hearts willing to receive the truth.
That warning still carries weight. It is possible to attend church, know Christian language, and move through familiar religious routines while becoming spiritually deaf. Hearing God requires more than searching for a feeling or waiting for a dramatic sign. It begins with surrendering to Jesus and receiving His Word as truth.
In Genesis 22, Abraham heard God’s command and responded through obedience. He did not understand how the promise concerning Isaac would survive the test, but he trusted the character of God. The Lord provided the sacrifice, revealing that obedience and faith are inseparable.
We cannot continually resist Scripture, protect our sin, and still expect clear direction from God. His voice will never contradict His written Word. Before asking God to reveal something new, we must confront what we have already refused to obey.
God still speaks. The deeper question is whether we truly belong to Christ and whether our hearts remain willing to hear, trust, and obey Him.
