The Rich Young Man: Building on the Right Foundation
It is possible to build a successful life and still miss what matters most. The rich young man came to Jesus with wealth, influence, and a sincere desire for eternal life. From the outside, it appeared that he had everything. But Jesus looked beyond his possessions and exposed what truly ruled his heart.
“Jesus said to him, ‘If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.’” Matthew 19:21, ESV
The issue was not simply that the man had money. The issue was that money had him. When Jesus called him to surrender everything and follow, the man walked away sorrowful because his possessions were too great. He wanted eternal life, but he was unwilling to release the thing standing between him and Christ.
Jesus will confront whatever we have built our identity and security upon. For some, it may be wealth. For others, it may be status, relationships, accomplishments, comfort, or control. Anything we refuse to surrender can become an idol, even if it appears respectable to everyone around us.
The rich young man had built his life on something that could not save him. His morality could not save him. His wealth could not save him. Eternal life could not be earned through another religious accomplishment. What he needed was complete surrender and a willingness to follow Jesus.
That same call remains before us. Christ does not want a carefully managed portion of our lives. He calls us to place everything in His hands and build our lives upon Him alone.
