Trusting God through life’s storms
Some storms arrive without warning. Life can change in a moment, leaving us afraid, overwhelmed, and wondering whether God sees what is happening. In Luke 8, the disciples faced a violent storm while Jesus slept in the boat. The wind was raging, water was filling the boat, and experienced fishermen believed they were about to die.
“He said to them, ‘Where is your faith?’ And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, ‘Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?’” Luke 8:25, ESV
The disciples were not outside the will of God. Jesus had told them to cross the lake, and they obeyed Him. Their storm did not come because they had wandered away. It came while they were following His direction.
That matters because difficulty is not always evidence that God has abandoned us or that we made the wrong decision. Sometimes storms meet us directly on the path of obedience. Faith does not promise a life without trouble. It teaches us where to turn when trouble comes.
Jesus stood and rebuked the wind and waves. What terrified the disciples immediately surrendered to His authority. The storm was powerful, but it was never greater than the One who was in the boat with them.
The greatest question in this passage is not whether Jesus can calm the storm. It is whether we will trust Him in the middle of it. Even when God seems silent, He is still present. Even when circumstances feel impossible, He remains completely in control.
