Understanding Paul’s Gospel: The Book of Romans Explained
The phrase “Paul’s gospel” can sound as if Paul preached a different message from Jesus. He did not.
Paul’s gospel was the gospel of Jesus Christ, revealed through Scripture and clearly explained throughout the Book of Romans.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16, ESV
Romans begins with a truth humanity often refuses to face: every person is guilty before a holy God. Religious people and rebellious people stand under the same judgment. None of us can earn salvation through good works, morality, heritage, or obedience to the law.
But the gospel does not end with our guilt.
God demonstrated His love by sending Jesus Christ to die for sinners. Christ carried the judgment we deserved, rose from the grave, and now offers justification to everyone who believes. We are made right with God by grace through faith, not through anything we could accomplish ourselves.
That grace does not give us permission to continue living under the control of sin. Those united with Christ have been given new life. The Holy Spirit transforms us, teaches us to walk in obedience, and assures us that we belong to God.
Romans then shows what the gospel produces. It changes how we worship, serve, endure suffering, treat other believers, respond to authority, and carry the message of Christ into the world.
Paul did not invent a new gospel. He proclaimed the death and resurrection of Jesus and explained what Christ’s finished work means for guilty sinners.
