Jesus Unveiled: Calling the First Disciples to Follow
Peter had worked through the night and caught nothing. He was tired, disappointed, and already cleaning his nets when Jesus stepped into his boat. After teaching the crowd, Jesus told Peter to return to the deep water and lower his nets again.
Peter had every reason to question the command. The conditions had not changed, and his experience told him the effort would fail. Still, he obeyed.
“But at your word I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:5, ESV
The catch was so large that the nets began to break and both boats started to sink. Peter had never seen anything like it. Yet the miracle did not make him proud. It exposed him. He fell before Jesus and said, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
Jesus did not reject Peter. He called him.
Christ told Peter that from that moment forward, he would be catching people. Peter, James, and John then brought their boats to shore, left everything, and followed Him.
They were not walking away from failure. They had just experienced the greatest catch of their lives. Their business had never looked more promising. But once they recognized who Jesus was, even their greatest success could not compete with His call.
Following Christ requires more than adding Him to the life we have already planned. His call confronts our excuses, rearranges our priorities, and demands a response. We cannot spend our lives trapped by “what if” while Jesus is calling us forward.
