Jesus Unveiled: What It Means to Be Born Again
Nicodemus was not an unbelieving outsider. He was a respected religious leader who studied Scripture, followed the law, and taught others about God.
Yet when he came to Jesus at night, Christ told him that religion was not enough.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3, ESV
Nicodemus struggled to understand how someone could be born a second time. But Jesus was not describing another physical birth. He was speaking about a spiritual transformation that only the Holy Spirit can accomplish.
Being born again is not joining a church, becoming more religious, or trying harder to live a moral life. It is receiving new life from God. We are not spiritually sick people who need minor improvement. Without Christ, we are spiritually dead and completely unable to save ourselves.
Salvation cannot be earned through good works or inherited from Christian parents. Nobody enters the Kingdom because they grew up in church, know the right language, or appear respectable. Every person must personally repent, believe in Jesus Christ, and be made new by the Spirit.
This new birth changes more than our eternal destination. It changes who we are. God gives us a new heart, new desires, and a new direction. The evidence of salvation is not perfection, but a transformed life that increasingly belongs to Christ.
Nicodemus had knowledge, position, and religion, but he still needed new life. So do we.
