Gideon: Faith to Trust God’s Calling
Gideon did not look like a mighty warrior when God called him. He was hiding from the Midianites, trying to preserve what little wheat he had. Israel had been oppressed for seven years, and fear had driven the people into caves. Yet the angel of the Lord addressed Gideon according to what God would make him, not what fear had reduced him to.
“And the LORD turned to him and said, ‘Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?’” Judges 6:14, ESV
Gideon immediately saw every reason he was unqualified. His clan was the weakest, and he considered himself the least in his father’s house. He questioned God, asked for signs, and struggled to believe that he could fulfill such a calling.
But God’s answer was not greater confidence in Gideon. It was His presence: “But I will be with you.”
God reduced Gideon’s army from thirty-two thousand men to only three hundred. He removed every opportunity for Israel to claim the victory as its own. The battle would not be won through superior strength, numbers, or strategy. God wanted His people to know that He alone had delivered them.
Gideon’s story shows us that fear and uncertainty do not automatically disqualify us from being used by God. Faith is not the absence of questions. It is choosing to obey while trusting that the One who called us will remain with us.
God may call us into something far beyond our natural ability. That is where dependence begins. Our confidence cannot rest in our qualifications. It must rest in His presence, power, and faithfulness.
