Rahab and the Scarlet Cord: Faith in God’s Salvation
Rahab lived in a city marked for judgment. Jericho’s walls appeared secure, but she had heard what the God of Israel had done.
While others trusted the city’s defenses, Rahab recognized that no wall could stand against the Lord.
“And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.” Joshua 2:11, ESV
Rahab’s faith was more than fear of Israel’s army. She confessed who God was and acted upon what she believed. She hid the spies, protected them at great personal risk, and pleaded for the lives of her family.
The scarlet cord placed in her window became the visible sign of a promise. When judgment reached Jericho, Rahab trusted that promise completely. Everything around her would fall, but the word she had received would stand.
Her past did not keep God from rescuing her. Scripture does not hide that Rahab had been a prostitute, but it also refuses to let that remain the final word over her life. By faith, she was delivered from judgment, brought among God’s people, and eventually placed in the family line of Jesus Christ.
Rahab’s story shows us that saving faith does more than acknowledge that God exists. It recognizes His authority, trusts His promise, and responds through obedience. Grace met Rahab inside a condemned city, but it did not leave her there.
No past is too broken for God to redeem. No situation is too hopeless for His salvation. When everything else collapses, those who place their faith in Him will discover that His promises still stand.
