From glory to glory: why God’s presence still terrifies comfortable Christians
Many believers say they want more of God’s presence, but Scripture shows that His presence is not always comfortable.
At Mount Sinai, Israel witnessed thunder, lightning, smoke, and the sound of a trumpet. They had already seen God deliver them from Egypt, divide the sea, provide food, and give them water. Yet when His holiness was revealed, the people trembled and stood far away.
They wanted God’s provision, but they were terrified by His presence.
The glory of God does not exist to give us an emotional moment. It reveals who He is and exposes what does not belong in us. His holiness confronts sin, pride, compromise, and every false version of Christianity we have created to protect our comfort.
Paul later wrote to the Church in Corinth:
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
Under the new covenant, believers are invited to draw near through Jesus Christ. But drawing near does not mean God becomes casual or ordinary. His presence transforms us. The closer we walk with Him, the less comfortable we should become with the sin and compromise He died to free us from.
Real glory does not hype us up. It exposes us, humbles us, and changes us.
