Are You Really a Friend of God?

Many people speak casually about being a friend of God. The phrase sounds comforting, but Jesus gave it far more weight than we often do. Friendship with Christ is not built upon religious language, emotional experiences, or simply claiming to believe. It is revealed through abiding, obedience, love, and lasting fruit.
“You are my friends if you do what I command you.” John 15:14, ESV
Jesus is not teaching that we earn His love through perfect performance. He had already told His disciples to abide in His love. Obedience is not the price of His friendship. It is the evidence of a life that truly remains connected to Him.
A branch cannot produce fruit after separating itself from the vine. In the same way, we cannot live fruitful Christian lives through our own strength. We must remain in Christ, depend upon Him, receive His Word, and allow His life to shape ours.
That relationship will produce visible change. Jesus said His followers would bear fruit, love one another, and obey what He commanded. A faith that continually resists His Word while claiming closeness with Him is deceiving itself.
Jesus also called His disciples friends because He had made known to them what He received from the Father. This friendship is an incredible privilege, but it also carries purpose. He chose and appointed them to go and bear fruit that would remain.
The question is not simply whether you call Jesus your friend. Does your life show that you abide in Him? Are you obeying His Word, loving others, and producing fruit that points people toward Christ?
The full message above explores John 15:1-17 and challenges us to examine what abiding in Christ, bearing fruit, and living in true friendship with God really mean.
