You Can’t Stay the Same After This Moment
Peter, James, and John followed Jesus up a high mountain without knowing what they were about to witness. Before their eyes, Christ was transfigured. His face shone like the sun, His clothes became white as light, and Moses and Elijah appeared beside Him.
For one brief moment, the disciples saw the glory that had always belonged to Jesus.
“He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’” Matthew 17:5, ESV
Peter wanted to preserve the moment by building three tents. But Jesus had not brought them up the mountain to remain there. The encounter was preparation for what waited below and for the suffering that was still ahead.
Spiritual encounters are powerful, but they are not the finish line. God reveals Himself so that we will listen, obey, and follow Him back into the places where people are hurting. The mountaintop must change how we live in the valley.
When the disciples came down, they immediately encountered a desperate father and a suffering son. The glory they had witnessed was now meeting the brokenness of the world. Jesus did not avoid the mess. He stepped directly into it.
We can become so focused on chasing another emotional experience that we miss the purpose of the one God has already given us. A genuine encounter with Christ should deepen our obedience, strengthen our faith, and move us toward His mission.
Peter, James, and John could not stay on the mountain. Neither can we.
