Jesus Unveiled: Forgiven and Free
A woman known throughout the city for her sinful life entered the home of a Pharisee named Simon. She had not been invited, and everyone in the room knew her reputation. Yet she came because Jesus was there.
Standing behind Him, she began weeping. Her tears fell upon His feet. She wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with expensive ointment.
Simon saw only her past. Jesus saw a woman reaching for mercy.
“And he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’” Luke 7:50, ESV
Simon questioned whether Jesus could truly be a prophet if He allowed a woman like this to touch Him. But while Simon judged her openly, he remained blind to the condition of his own heart. He had welcomed Jesus into his house without offering the common signs of hospitality. The woman entered with nothing to protect and poured out everything she had.
Jesus told a story about two people whose debts were canceled. One owed far more than the other, but neither could repay what was owed. Both needed forgiveness.
That was the truth Simon missed. The woman’s need was obvious, but his pride left him unable to recognize his own. He was physically close to Jesus and still missed who was in the room.
The woman did not earn forgiveness through her tears or costly gift. Her actions revealed the faith and gratitude already filling her heart. Jesus forgave her sins, defended her before her accusers, and sent her away in peace.
We can hide behind religion or fall at the feet of Jesus. Freedom begins when we stop defending ourselves and surrender completely to Him.
