The Gospel is not “You finally got your life together.” The Gospel is “BUT God.”

A lot of people treat Christianity like a self-improvement program.

You were making a mess of your life, then you started making better choices. You became more disciplined, stopped doing certain things, and finally got your life together.

But that is not the gospel.

Paul says:

“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked.” Ephesians 2:1-2, ESV

He did not say we were basically good people who needed a little help. He said we were dead in our sin.

Dead people cannot save themselves. That is what makes the next two words so powerful:

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us… made us alive together with Christ.” Ephesians 2:4-5, ESV

You were dead, BUT GOD.

You were trapped in sin, BUT GOD.

You could not clean yourself up or earn your way back to Him, BUT GOD was rich in mercy.

I know that personally. There was a time when addiction had completely taken over my life. I did not need better advice or a motivational speech. I needed Jesus Christ to save me.

I did not rescue myself. God met me in my brokenness and gave me a new life.

That is grace.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8, ESV

Grace did not find you impressive. Grace found you dead and made you alive in Christ.

But grace does not leave us where it found us.

Paul goes on to say:

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.” Ephesians 2:10, ESV

We are not saved by good works, but we are saved for good works.

We do not obey Jesus to earn salvation. We obey Him because He has saved us. When Christ makes someone alive, that new life should begin to show in what they love, how they live, and what they pursue.

Maybe you have spent years trying to fix yourself. Maybe you keep promising that tomorrow will be different.

The answer is not trying harder to become your own savior.

The answer is repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

The gospel is not, “I finally got my life together.”

The gospel is, “I was dead in my sin, BUT GOD was rich in mercy.”

Jesus Christ still saves. He still restores. He still makes dead people alive. And when He does, He gets all the glory.
