The cross and the crown: the pain, the power, and the promise
Before there was an empty tomb, there was a cross. Before the victory of resurrection morning, Jesus endured betrayal, rejection, humiliation, suffering, and death.
The crucifixion was not an unfortunate interruption to His mission. It was the reason He came.
“Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!’ And having said this he breathed his last.”Luke 23:46, ESV
Jesus did not lose control of His life. He willingly surrendered it. On the cross, the sinless Son of God carried the judgment guilty sinners deserved. Human hatred was exposed, but so was the fierce love of God.
Darkness covered the land. The temple curtain was torn in two. The barrier separating sinful humanity from the presence of God had been opened through the sacrifice of Christ.
But death did not have the final word.
On the first day of the week, women arrived at the tomb and found the stone rolled away. The body of Jesus was gone. Angels declared, “He is not here, but has risen” (Luke 24:6).
The cross proves that our sin is more serious than we want to admit. The empty tomb proves that the power of Jesus is greater than sin, death, and hell. Christianity is not built upon the memory of a dead teacher. It stands upon the risen King.
Resurrection is not only a doctrine to believe. It is a call to step out of spiritual death and live in the new life Christ provides. The same Jesus who walked out of the grave still forgives sinners, restores broken people, and changes lives.
