Ekklesia unleashed: purity before power
Acts 5 is not a comfortable passage. It forces us to confront a truth the modern Church often avoids: God cares deeply about the purity of His people.
Ananias and Sapphira sold a piece of property and brought part of the money to the apostles. Keeping part of the money was not the sin. Peter made it clear that the property belonged to them and the giving was voluntary. Their sin was pretending to give everything while secretly holding some back.
They wanted the appearance of sacrifice without the reality of surrender. Peter confronted Ananias directly:
“Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?” Acts 5:3 ESV
This was not merely dishonesty toward church leaders. It was a deliberate attempt to deceive God and gain spiritual recognition through a false image.
Their judgment was immediate, and great fear came upon the entire Church. The fear of the Lord is not panic that drives us away from God. It is holy reverence that reminds us He cannot be manipulated, mocked, or deceived. God sees beyond the platform, the performance, and the public reputation. He sees the heart.
Real revival cannot be built on spiritual theater. The same Holy Spirit who gives power also exposes hypocrisy and calls believers to holiness. We cannot ask God to move powerfully while protecting the very things He is confronting.
