Jesus unveiled: meeting Jesus on the Emmaus road
Two disciples left Jerusalem carrying disappointment, confusion, and shattered expectations. Jesus had been crucified, the tomb was reportedly empty, and they could not make sense of what had happened.
As they walked toward Emmaus, Jesus came alongside them. But they did not recognize Him.
“But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.” Luke 24:16, ESV
They believed Jesus had been a powerful prophet. They had hoped He was the One who would redeem Israel. Now those hopes appeared buried in a tomb.
Jesus listened to their grief, then walked them through the Scriptures. Beginning with Moses and the Prophets, He showed them that the Messiah’s suffering was not evidence that God’s plan had failed. The cross had always been part of the plan.
Their circumstances did not immediately change, but their understanding began to. Later they said, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road?” (Luke 24:32).
When Jesus broke bread with them, their eyes were opened. They finally recognized that the risen Christ had been walking beside them the entire time.
There are seasons when God feels absent because our expectations have collapsed. We assume He has left because we cannot recognize what He is doing. But disappointment does not mean Jesus has abandoned the road.
The answer is not to build faith around feelings or assumptions. We must return to Scripture and allow God’s Word to correct what pain has distorted.
The disciples immediately returned to Jerusalem to tell the others that Jesus was alive. An encounter with the risen Christ changed their direction.
