His steps, His story: the Kingdom announced
One of the most dangerous places spiritually can be a room filled with people who know the Scriptures but have become too familiar to recognize what God is doing.
In Luke 4, Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth and entered the synagogue.
He stood to read from Isaiah, declaring good news to the poor, freedom for captives, sight for the blind, and liberty for the oppressed.
Then He sat down and said:
“Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:21 ESV
Jesus was announcing that the promised Kingdom had arrived and that He was the One Isaiah had been pointing toward. The people initially marveled at His words, but their admiration quickly changed when Jesus confronted their unbelief and entitlement.
They knew His family. They had watched Him grow up. Their familiarity convinced them they already understood Him. When Jesus reminded them that God had shown mercy to outsiders in the days of Elijah and Elisha, the congregation became furious.
They wanted a Messiah who would meet their expectations, prove Himself on their terms, and preserve their assumptions. Jesus refused.
Familiarity is not faith. We can know Bible stories, attend church for years, and speak Christian language while resisting the authority of Christ. Jesus does not come merely to inspire us. He comes as King, and His Kingdom demands repentance, surrender, and obedience.

That warning still matters. We do not get to set the terms with God. Christ is not asking for our approval. He is calling us to recognize who He is, submit to His Kingdom, and follow Him.
