Jesus Unveiled: Boyhood and God’s Purpose
We know about the birth of Jesus and the beginning of His public ministry, but Scripture tells us very little about the years between them. One moment stands out. At twelve years old, Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions.
“And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” Luke 2:52, ESV
Jesus already understood that His life belonged to the Father. When Mary and Joseph finally found Him, He asked, “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” His purpose was clear, even though His public ministry would not begin for many years.
Still, Jesus returned home with them and lived in submission to His earthly parents. He did not rush ahead, demand recognition, or attempt to force the timing of His calling. The Son of God embraced years of preparation, growth, obedience, and ordinary life before stepping into public ministry.
That confronts our desire to skip the process. We want the open door, visible assignment, or significant moment, but God often prepares people in hidden places. David tended sheep before facing Goliath. Joseph endured slavery and prison before entering Pharaoh’s palace. Jesus spent years growing before His ministry was revealed.
A waiting season is not a wasted season. God uses hidden years to shape character, deepen obedience, and prepare us for responsibilities we are not yet ready to carry.
Preparation matters. Public approval cannot replace private growth, and calling does not remove the need for patience. If God has placed you in a season that feels quiet or unnoticed, do not despise it. Keep pursuing Him. Keep growing. Keep obeying.
