They built on the wrong foundation
A building can look impressive while serious damage is spreading beneath the surface. If the foundation is compromised, appearance will not prevent collapse.
The same is true of faith and the Church.
In Matthew 16, Jesus asked His disciples what people were saying about Him. The answers were respectful, but they were wrong. Some believed He was John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or another prophet. Then Jesus made the question personal: “But who do you say that I am?”
Peter answered:
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16 ESV
That confession changed everything. Jesus was not simply another teacher, prophet, or religious leader. He was the promised Messiah and the Son of God.
The true Church cannot be built on public opinion, cultural trends, personal preferences, or the charisma of a leader. It must remain grounded in the truth of who Jesus is. When Christ is replaced by entertainment, politics, tradition, or human ambition, the structure may remain standing for a while, but the foundation has already been compromised.
Jesus promised to build His Church, and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. That promise belongs to His Church, built according to His truth and centered on His identity.

Who do we say He is? Our answer cannot remain a theological statement we repeat. It must become the foundation beneath everything we believe, preach, and build. Anything centered on less than Christ will eventually fall.
