Responding to God’s Call: Lessons from Elisha’s Journey
God’s call rarely comes when everything is settled, convenient, or easy to leave behind. Elisha was working in the field when Elijah found him and placed his cloak upon him. In a single moment, an ordinary day became a defining decision. Elisha had to choose whether he would remain where he was comfortable or surrender everything to follow where God was leading.
“Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.” 1 Kings 19:21, ESV
Elisha did more than feel inspired. He slaughtered his oxen, burned the equipment he had used to make a living, and fed the people. He removed the possibility of returning to his former life. There was no backup plan waiting in the field. His response was immediate, costly, and complete.
That kind of surrender confronts us. We often want God to reveal the entire journey before we take the first step. We want certainty, security, and an explanation of how everything will work. But faith does not always receive the whole plan. Sometimes faith simply hears the call of God and responds.
The “plows” in our lives may look different from Elisha’s. They can be old ambitions, familiar routines, relationships, possessions, or the need to remain in control. Whatever they are, they become dangerous when we allow them to keep us from fully obeying God.
Elisha’s journey reminds us that answering God’s call requires more than good intentions. It requires surrender. God is still calling people to leave behind what keeps them bound, step forward in faith, and follow Him without holding anything back.
