God alone
Before anything existed, God already was. That truth from Genesis 1 changes everything. We often begin with creation itself, but Scripture begins even deeper than that. Before light, land, humanity, history, or anything we can see, there was God alone.
Genesis 1:1-2 confronts every reduced view of God. He is not part of creation. He is not one force among many. He did not emerge from something greater than Himself. Scripture begins by placing God above everything else as eternal, sovereign, and completely unmatched.
That matters because what we believe about God shapes everything that follows. If our view of Him is too small, our understanding of truth, creation, humanity, and faith will eventually become distorted as well. The Bible does not begin by explaining God away. It begins by declaring Him.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 (ESV)
There is something deeply humbling about those opening words. We are not the center of the story. God is. We did not create Him, define Him, or give Him authority. He was before us, He stands above us, and everything begins with Him.
That truth should challenge the way we approach Scripture. We cannot reshape God to fit our preferences and still claim to be following the God revealed in His Word. We must begin where the Bible begins.
